I am back with another mouth watering recipe which can be made under 15 mins!! I am sure everyone of us have tasted Malai Pedas or Malai Barfi's some or the other time in our lifetime :) Any special occasion and we have a box of delicious pedas ready. May it be Diwali or Rakshabandhan or a Birthday or if your child has scored good percentage in 10th....pedas and barfi's are served on almost all occasions. With just 3 ingredients used these are so much easier to make than the original version and absolutely no compromise in taste!
This weekend I had a small reunion of my college friends, the menu was very simple as in such hot weather none of us were really interested in having a heavy meal. The menu was kept simple, Methi Malai Mutter(my updated version coming up very soon) with parathas and for dessert homemade version of Malai Barfi. Everyone enjoyed the barfi's a lot and went back with the recipe :) This recipe can be made in microwave as well as on gas stove. I made these on gas stove.

Malai Barfi/Malai Peda
1 stick unsalted butter (113 gms)
2 cups milk powder, 240 gms (I used Everyday)
1 tin sweetened condensed milk, 400 ml (I used Milkmaid)
Masala milk powder for garnishing / silvered almonds / pistachios etc
Procedure Gas Stove Version:-
- In a heavy bottom pan or a non stick pan melt the butter on low heat.
- Once melted remove the pan from heat and add in the milk powder and condensed milk.
- Mix the mixture properly with a spatula.
- Heat this mixture on slow heat for about 2 mins with stirring constantly. Be gentle while stirring.
- Again remove the mixture from heat and mix well.
- Repeat the 5 and 6 steps twice more, do make sure the mixture does not get burnt.
- Once the mixture is thickened and starts to loose the sides of the pan.
- If you are planning to make barfi than grease a plate with some butter or ghee and immediately spread the mixture on the plate smoothing the top. Sprinkle masala milk powder evenly on top and keep it in fridge to firm up. Once cooled you can cut slices and serve them.
- If you want to make pedas, cool the mixture for 15 to 20 mins until it comes down to room temperature. Take one spoonful mixture in your greased hands and gently roll it to form a ball. Press it lightly in middle to flatten the ball. Similarly make pedas of the entire mixture and decorate with silvered almonds or pistachios.
Verdict - These were a BIG hit in my house and so easy to make! Its a must try for everyone who has a sweet tooth and I am sure you wont be disappointed!
Lots of Love,

Greetings from the Scottish Borders, where you have a true fan! I didn't quite understand the item on the ingredients list called "masala milk powder" and I didn't quite get step 7 - does that mean "when the mixture starts to leave the sides of the pan"? I assume the recipe will work on an electric stove, too. Barfi is always nice to have, but I am going to start with pedas. Nice to see that you have started posting again. In which region of India are you based?
Good 2 c u back wid d delicious post..burfi looks really delicious...very decadent n yumm
Hi Angel of the North..I could not find your email id hence replying to you here. Masala milk powder is nothing but mixture of dried fruits like almonds, cashews, pistachios along with cardamon and saffron. It can be used as topping on many desserts as well as you can add a spoonful of it to warm milk and enjoy. Yes step 7 means when the mixture starts to leave the sides of the pan. The recipe should definately work on electric stove just make sure you use heavy bottom pan. I am originally from Bombay :) Hope this helps in clarifying your doubts.
What a beautiful and delicious treat this is, Parita! Yum!

hi,
where can i find the masala milk powder?
Hi Smitha, you can get masala milk powder in any grocery shop, there are different brands available, I usually buy Everest. Or else you can also make it at home if you have food processor, masala milk powder is basically powder of almonds, pistachios, cashewnuts, cardamon pods and saffron. Hope this helps!
Oh wow, this looks so utterly delicious. Loved the fact that it's so simple and easy to make. Great antidote for my sweet tooth :)
hi parita,
thank u so much for the quick reply. it was really helpful for me. and i do have one more question about the stove top recipe. i bought the milk powder from the local grocery shop and the powder texture was coarse. so, if i make this burfi on the stove top will i get the smooth consistency like u have shown in the pic. because i made this in the microwave and it had a coarse texture which i did not like it much. so, i want to know where can i find the every day brand milk powder? did u got it from desi grocery store?
just mail me back and help me out because i badly want to try the stove top version because the burfi is smooth and very tempting.
if i make it with any brand milk powder on the stove top will i get the same texture as shown in the picture(above)?
mail me soon and save me from crazy doubts
hi parita,
can u reply to my message. i have been waiting from the last 3 days
Hi Smitha, apologize for the delay in reply, I made this recipe on gas stove only and i did not have any problem with coarse mixture, you just need to mix the milk powder, condensed milk and butter really well. Also I live in Pune so I really dont have much idea about the type and brands of milk powder available at your place, if you are in india you can find everyday milk powder in any grocery store..hope this helps!
wow... yummy post n recipe.. its so easy... will def try this...
parita whr to find unsalted butter??? I normally use Amul butter, which is salted.
Parita my barfi became very soft... I cannot pick dem frm d plate.. they r stuck... :( I guess thts becoz I used d Milk powder pckt of 190gm :(( bt I did manage d quantity of butter n milkmaid... n also greased my plate... still its stuck.. :( bt its tasting yumyyyy.... n looking exactly d same way its looking in ur plate... juz the difference is mine are not coming off :( Ufff..!!
Hi Manali...thank you for your feedback :) your problem is def bcoz of less amount of milk powder used..also you have to cool it in fridge for atleast 2 to 3 hours..did you do that?
Regarding your unsalted butter..i usually get in from a near by local dairy..u usually can find it in local dairies or even request the person to make some fresh for you..works for me :)
hope this helps..do let me know if u have any other questions :)
